Last February, our colleagues from GAIKER sampled and analysed of discarded fishing nets from Ondarroa port. Thanks to BIDEZAIN, the waste managers operating in ports of Bizkaia province, more than 150 kg of fishing nets were selected and collected from 6,500 kg container nets for further analysis.
The nets are regularly stored in a container and the amount varies depending on the port needs and the ongoing campaigns undertaken by the different fishers’ associations. Type and nets composition were diverse but GAIKER analysis pointed out to polyolefin as the raw material of these discarded nets.
